What if it all goes Right?
Often times it feels like everything is going wrong in our lives. The Universe is working against us, a karmic black cloud is following us. But what if we can change that?
The Science of our Brain:
Because our brain is still a very old machine, it still looks at the world through the lens of worry first. Historically that protected us from things in our world that could hurt us. That thinking worked best when we were hunters and gatherers. In modern times, we don’t have to worry about our safety nearly as much as our ancestors did. There are many less threats to our safety now, no need to run, fight or freeze like our cave man ancestors.
How to Reduce Worry:
The worried brain looks for things to worry about. We often catastrophize and that makes the worry feel worse. It's always looking for the problem not the solution. Take a minute to think about that with an example from your own life… When was a time you were anxious about something? Recall where your thoughts took you? “What if…”? Seriously, do it! (I’ll wait here.)
But what if you decided to look for the solution rather than focus on the problem? Could you tell yourself “What if it all goes Right?”
Try it! Next time you are worried about something remember: The worried brain is looking for things to worry about and that makes us feel worse about it.
Ask yourself; “OK, but what if it all goes Right?” And follow that line of thinking. Work it out to its potentially positive (or at least neutral) outcome. What does that future look like? It might look like, “Wow, I am so glad we talked out that conflict, I feel so much better now. “ or “I didn’t know that my boss thought I was doing such a good job on that project, Nice.”
While our world is not perfect, it’s really not as bad as our brain thinks it is and my hope is that maybe, you find more peace of mind if you try this exercise next time you are worried.
With Love,
